The National Pan-Hellenic Council hosts an event called "Meet the Greeks" at the beginning of each semester for interested students. This event encourages interested students to meet members and learn more about NPHC and its member organizations at UT Arlington. In addition, throughout the year individual chapters hold Informational Sessions (sometimes called Interest Meetings or Rush). Informational sessions give interested students and NPHC chapters the chance to discuss the benefits of membership in greater detail. It is at the Informational Sessions where interested men and women are given an introduction to the specific organization, its members and information on chapter programs and policies on membership. NPHC also encourages interested students to do independent research on a fraternity or sorority. Some good books for this independent research include Black Greek 101 by Walter Kimbrough and African American Fraternities and Sororities: The Legacy and the Vision edited by Tamara L. Brown, Gregory S. Parks, and Clarenda M. Phillips.
After a person applies to an organization and has been accepted, the new member education period begins. Typically, this period involves classroom sessions with a chapter advisor that educate potential new members about the history, policies, and programs of the organization. The overall Intake process is different for each fraternity and sorority, so interested students should consult a representative from the organization they wish to join for specific membership information. The University community does not know potential new members until they are initiated.
"Meet the Greeks" for the Spring 2010 semester will be held on Thursday, February 4th from 7:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. in the Rio Grande room of the University Center (Upper U.C.).
